Laughing with Nature

“Haven’t you seen something in nature that made you laugh? Perhaps you did not make the connection-that you were meant to laugh. That it was God who made you laugh. That He laughed with you. Now you know something very important about Jesus.” John Eldredge, Beautiful Outlaw.

I have on more than one occasion seen something in nature that has made me laugh. Now my heart is warmed and inspired when I think that it was God laughing with me as I laughed.

Earlier this year my wife and I were paddleboarding. It was a beautiful morning on Weeks Bay. As we paddled I noticed a long skinny fish jumping over something floating in the water. It continued to jump back and forth across this floating object. It looked to be having the time of it’s life. It was the funniest thing. We laughed.

It reminds me of a similar experience. My family and I got up at sunrise and headed to the beach for a paddle. There was a Styrofoam food container floating in the water. The same type of fish was doing the exact thing I saw the other fish doing. It jumped from one side to the other. It continued to do this over and over. My wife, kids, and I laughed at the site.

There was a squirrel we had living in our yard. This squirrel would crack us up. It would start going crazy jumping all around. It was having the time of it’s life and we were getting a good laugh.

We read that the heavens declare the glory of God. These moments reveal something special about God. To think he is laughing with us. To think this is his creation. To think that his creation is revealing something of God.
